Richard F. "Dick" Varney Obituary

Richard “Dick” Varney, 93, longtime resident of Southborough died March 19, 2025.  He was the husband of 68 years to Helen (Walkup) Varney.

Dick was an aerial photographer during the Korean Conflict flying in a B-26 and in the last B-29 over Korea.  He later served as a sergeant in the US Air Force flying in a B-36

Dick retired as a Chemical Engineer from Polaroid Corporation.

He was also known as Coach Varney after he organized the Southborough Youth Hockey League in the mid 1960's.

Besides his wife, Helen, he is survived by his 3 children, Brenda O’Rourke (Kevin), Mark Varney (Vicky Fontaine), and Christina Almada (Edward).  His grandchildren, Rachel Hatstat (Frederick), Jennifer Palestini (Marc), Bradley Varney (Bridget), Hillary O’Rourke, Thomas Lane, and 7 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother Robert Varney (Karen), sisters Barbara Coville, and Janet Nix. He was predeceased by his grandson Conor O’Rourke, his sisters June Place, Dorothy Peters, Nancy Dunham and his brother Albert Varney.

Visiting Hours for Richard will be held on Monday, March 24, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Morris-Johnston Funeral Home, 40 Main Street, Southborough, MA 01772. Military Honors will be held at The Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne, MA 02532 at 10:45 am on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
