Joseph A. Maguire, 78 of Shrewsbury and formerly of Marlborough, Northborough and Southborough, died on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Born in Marlborough he was the son of the late Benedict and Catherine (Carey) Maguire.

Joe was a 1956 graduate of the former Peter’s High School in Southborough where he was very active playing a variety of sports.  In 1961 he was drafted into the Army where he was stationed at West Point in the Sports Branch. Joe had a long career at All State Trucking which later became P.I.E. as an office manager retiring in 1990. After several years of retirement he went back to work for Verizon and retired in 2007 as “Mayor of the Mailroom”. He loved vacationing at “Happy Hampton” Beach where many family memories were made.    
He was a member of the Fayville Athletic Association and one of the founders and 1st president of the Marlborough Eagles Aerie 3565, in addition, he was a member of Marlborough AMVETS Post 1980; Marlborough Legion Post 132;  and the Northborough Legion, Piccard Post 234. Joe was the announcer for the Marlborough Shamrock’s for many years, and traveled to Ireland with the team in 1986. He was the Commissioner of the Marlborough/Hudson Touch Football League. After moving to Shrewsbury he was an active member of the Shrewsbury Senior Center, where he enjoyed playing bocce and visiting “Roger’s cafe” each morning to shoot the breeze with the guys.  Joe was a total sports enthusiast, especially enjoying  college basketball. He was an avid Providence College basketball fan in the 1970’s and was a huge Boston Braves fan, being a member of the fan club for many years.  With all that Joe did, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughters, Catherine Vitale and her husband John; Suzanne Murray and her husband Andy, all of Shrewsbury;  a brother, Leo Maguire and his wife Joan of FL; a sister, Sheila Wilson and her husband John of Southborough; 5 grandchildren, Gina and Marco Vitale and Hillary, Hannah, and Andrew Murray; a sister in law Anne Maguire of Southborough; a special friend Adeline of Shrewsbury and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his brothers, William and Edward Maguire.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 14,  from 2 to 5PM at the Morris Funeral Home, 40 Main Street, Southborough.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, August 15, at 10:30 AM at St. Anne Church, 20 Boston Road, Southborough. Burial will follow in the Southborough Rural Cemetery.
