At the age of 98, and with her loved ones close in heart, Irene McCarthy Chipman passed peacefully into eternal rest on June 28, 2025, from advanced dementia. A woman of deep faith, she faced life with strength, grace and devotion. Though memories faded, the warmth of her spirit and her loving nature remained ever-present.

Irene was a devoted wife and mother, predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert Waterhouse Chipman and her son, Robert W. Chipman Jr and a grandson, Joseph Robert Loughlin.

She cherished her family deeply, especially summers spent camping at Sebago Lake and gathering at Higgins Beach. An accomplished bridge player, seamstress and baker, she brought care and creativity to everything she touched.

She is survived by her daughters, Candace Loughlin, her husband Stephen, Cynthia Loughlin, her husband, Bruce, all of Marlborough, Massachusetts, Debra Root of Portland, Maine and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Chipman of Northborough, Massachusetts. She was the sole survivor of her immediate family, predeceased by her parents, George T. McCarthy and Irene Chaisson McCarthy and siblings Richard McCarthy, Dorothy Lussier, George McCarthy, Mary Cavers, Patricia Charest, Lorraine Ouellette, Gloria May and Edward McCarthy.

She was “Nana” to 14 surviving grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 34 nieces and nephews who affectionately knew her as “Aunt Irene.” Irene’s legacy is one of love, loyalty and integrity. Her family is forever blessed to have shared in her long and beautiful life.

The family is grateful for the loving care she received at Shrewsbury Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Staff Appreciation Fund at Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehab, 40 Julio Drive, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in her memory would be a fitting tribute to those who cared for her with respect and compassion.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 11 Prospect Street, Marlborough, MA on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 11:00 am.
